How Assay turns a job ad into a defensible assessment
Assay is an AI interview platform that generates structured interview questions from job descriptions, scores candidate answers in real-time, and produces white-labeled reports for your clients. Three steps. No technical expertise required from your recruiters.
How does Assay generate interview questions from a job ad?
Assay analyzes the job description and generates domain-specific, seniority-calibrated questions in under 30 seconds.
Step 1: Paste or fetch the job ad
Copy the full job description into Assay, or provide a URL and Assay extracts the text automatically. The AI identifies the domain (IT, marketing, finance, HR, legal), seniority level (junior through expert), required skills, and role-specific competencies. A job ad for a "Senior Python Backend Developer" triggers different questions than one for a "Marketing Manager" — even if both are labeled "senior."
Step 2: AI generates calibrated questions
Assay produces 6-15 interview questions organized by difficulty tier: accessible, intermediate, and advanced. Each question comes with expected answer benchmarks and key signals to listen for — so even a non-technical recruiter knows what a strong answer sounds like. The question generation is powered by Claude (Anthropic), calibrated against real interview patterns across technical and specialist roles.
Step 3: Choose screening or full interview
Screening mode selects 2 questions for a quick 10-minute pass/fail evaluation — ideal for high-volume candidate triage. Full interview mode uses 6-10 questions for a 45-minute deep assessment with per-question ratings and a comprehensive report. Both modes use the same AI-generated question pool, just different depth.
How does Assay's AI score candidate answers?
Assay transcribes the interview in real-time and evaluates each answer against role-specific benchmarks.
Real-time transcription
Assay uses Deepgram Nova-2 for real-time speech-to-text with speaker diarization. It runs alongside Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, or in person — capturing what both the interviewer and candidate say. The transcript is available immediately, no post-processing required.
Per-question evaluation
After each answer, Assay evaluates the transcript against the expected benchmarks for that question. The AI identifies key signals covered, signals missed, and rates the answer on a 1-5 scale with a written explanation. This happens in seconds — before the recruiter moves to the next question.
Coaching whispers
During the interview, Assay provides real-time coaching suggestions to the recruiter: follow-up questions to probe deeper, missed topics worth exploring, and positive signals to acknowledge. The candidate never sees these — they appear only on the recruiter's screen.
Human override
Every AI rating can be overridden by the interviewer. If the recruiter disagrees with a score, they adjust it with a reason. Both the original AI rating and the human override are logged in the audit trail — creating a transparent, EU AI Act compliant record.

How do recruiters use Assay during a live interview?
Assay runs alongside the recruiter's existing video call tool — Zoom, Teams, Meet, or in person.
Open Assay alongside your call. The recruiter sees the current question, expected signals, and a live transcript on their screen. The candidate sees nothing from Assay.
Ask the question, let them answer. Assay transcribes in real-time and provides coaching whispers (follow-up prompts, missed signals) visible only to the recruiter.
Move to the next question. Assay evaluates the answer immediately and selects the next question adaptively — harder if the candidate is performing well, easier if they're struggling.
End the interview, get the report. Assay generates a final assessment with an overall recommendation, per-question breakdown, and a white-labeled PDF report ready to send to your client.
"We built Assay because we were embarrassed by our own interview process. Our recruiters are great at finding people. But when a client asked us to justify a technical recommendation, we had nothing structured to show them."
